Submission: Options to reduce emissions from organic waste

A Bioenergy Association submission to the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions & Transport (July 2026)

BANZ welcomes this consultation and considers it broadly moves the organics industry in the right direction, towards sustainable circular principles. In particular, we support:

  • The focus on prioritising food waste and food loss reduction at the top of the waste hierarchy.
  • Support for councils and businesses to establish source separation of organic materials.
  • The work to improve the accuracy and credibility of landfill emissions measurement in order to incentivise more sustainable material flow.

The submission document represents the views of the Bioenergy Association New Zealand and its members.
